Know Before You Go
One minute is all it takes for a child to drown.
The three essential rules of water safety are:
1- TEST & TEACH Have your child's seimming skills tested
at the YMCA.
2- WATCH & GUARD Appoint an adult to supervise all pool
ativities. Add barriers around your own pool.
3- THROW, DON'T GO Throw out a floation device or use a pole
to reach a drowning child. Never jump in the save.

instruction is for everyone. The five main components of
swim instruction are: Personal safety; Personal Growth; Water
adjustment, breath control, balance, and locomotion; Water Sports and
games; and Rescue. *Be sure to bring previous progress reports if
continuing with lessons. Participants will be evaluated for
Parent-Child Swim (Infants and Toddlers, ages 6 months to 3 years)
The primary objective of this 30-minute class is to promote water
enrichment & aquatic readiness. Shrimps: 6-8 months; Child
can control the head and sit with support from the hands.
Kippers: 9-12 months; Child can sit without support and stand with
support from the hands. Inias: 3-18 months; Child can stand
without support and walk with or without support or aid.
Perch: 19-36 months; Child can run and jump.

Preschool Swim (Ages 3-5 years) (Class Limit: 20)
Children will develop an awareness of their own bodies, acquire a
feeling of independence, gain a sense of success, and increase their
self esteem. This age is less focused on water adjustment and
more but toward progressing elementary swimming skills. Pike: Self
support for 30 seconds with floatation belt; Front and back float with
floatation belt, 20 seconds. Eel: Front and back float without
floatation belt for 10 seconds; Ray: Can tread water 20-30
seconds with IFD; Front and back float 30 seconds without IFD; Paddle
15 yards with PFD. Starfish: Tread water 20-30 seconds
without IFD; Front and back float one minute plus;

Youth Swim (Ages 6-12 ) (Class Limit: 20)
This program helps participants lay a good foundation of basic aquatic
skills. It will lead them to develop a lifelong appreciation for
aquatic activities which include not only swimming, but also
lifesaving, lifeguarding and aquatic sports. Polliwog: Self
supporting with or without float belt for 30 seconds; Jump in and
paddle 10 yards out and back to wall with PFD; Paddle on front, back,
and side 25 yards with floatation belt and 20 ft. without. Guppy:
Float on front and back one minute plus without IFD; Tread water 20-30
seonds with or without IFD; Jump into deep water and paddle 15 yards
out and back to wall without PFD; stroke on front, back, and side 25
yards with or without IFD. Minnow: Swim 25 yards on front
and back with PFD; Freestyle, breaststroke and backstroke 25
yards. Fish: Tread water three minutes; Float for six minutes
without IFD; Breast, back and free 50 yards, butterfly 25 yards (15
fins, 10 without). Flying Fish: Tread water for six minutes;
Back, Free, and Breast 100 yards, butterfly 25 yards without
fins. Shark: 200 individual medley with starts and turns;
faster times. Porpoise: Tread for one minute with diving brick;
200 individual medley with starts and turns; finding best ways to
decrease times; ready for competitive swim.

Teens & Adults (Ages 12 and up)
This class is especially designed to instruct those who have a fear of
the water. Instructors work with students in a small group,
assisting them in overcoming their fears and begin to develop basic

Masters Swim Team
If your goals are somewhere between improving your swimming up
to competing against the best swimmers in the world, this free program
is for you. Our team is comprised of collegiate swimmers,
triathlon enthusiasts, novices, and everything in between. We
compete in the Allegheny Mountain Y Masters Association league, and our
meets are usually once a month, which are competitive and a lot of
fun. You can usually find us practicing between 7-8 AM most
weekdays and 7:30-9:00 on Saturdays. If interested, contact the Y

Harrison Area YMCA Swim Team (HAYST)
Join this highly successful year-round
competitive swim team program which starts Sept. 9, 2014. The
program has constructive team workouts with emphasis on stroke
mechanics, especially in the younger age group, along with building
endurance. Our swim team competes in 15+ meets a year in Ohio and
West Virginia. Children up to 18 are encouraged to join.
Children must be able to swim at least two laps of freestyle and
backstroke. For our pre-competition level (ages 8 and under),
swimmers must be able to swim one lap of freestyle and one lap of
backstroke. You must be a member of the Harrison County YMCA to
participate. In order to participate in the Clarksburg Classic,
swimmers must be registered by Sept. 13, 2012. Otherwise,
swimmers must participate in a minimum of 14 practices prior to
competing in a meet.

Competition 1 – 5 two hour practices/week $65/month
Competition 2 – 4 one & a half hour practices/week $55/month
